Conference support: Annual Kathmandu Conference on Nepal & the Himalaya

This small grant provided support for regional networking in South Asia, in relation to the Himalayan region. Two ESPA partners in the region, CEDAR India and SIAS Kathmandu, convened a panel at the Annual Kathmandu Conference on Nepal & the Himalaya, which was held in Kathmandu in July 2015. This conference was particularly important in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, and was a key opportunity for ESPA’s regional partners in South Asia to interact with important policy and academic debates. The outputs from this grant included papers from this panel, and a report on the opportunities for a regional level initiative on the Himalayas, to be developed by the Centre for Ecology Development and Research (CEDAR), the Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS), and the ESPA Regional Evidence Advisor for South Asia. The participation of these ESPA partners in this high profile event enhanced the recognition of ESPA research in the region, built capacity within each organisation, and increased the learning and potential impact of the research, especially through interaction with each other and the other scholarly and practitioner audiences at the conference. This, ultimately, informed ESPA’s engagement and longer term research and impact strategies in the region, especially in relation to the Himalayas.
